THE PALAVEEV SISTERS IN THE STORM OF HISTORY (PART ONE)

    Book ID/图书代码: 05765018C00001

English Summary/英文概要: The story kicks off in 1940s Bulgaria. World War II is raging. Two girls from the family of a wealthy industrialist, the twins Kara and Ira, are seeking freedom and adventure, determined to evade the destiny of traditional bourgeois wives. Raised by a British governess, they study in the most elite girls’ school in Bulgaria and are avid readers of comics provided regularly by their uncle who lives in the US. Inspired by a combustible mix of superheroes and leftist ideas, the teens decide to run away and join the Partisans. They stage their own kidnapping to provide resources for the Revolution, but the plan derails. The twin beauties find themselves lost in the mountains amid a dozen or so rough fighters led by “comrade” Medved. The commander, a product of the grueling school of Soviet military counterintelligence, keeps a grim secret. His past bears a bitter encounter with the GULAG and the reality of the “Soviet Heaven.” After a wild journey through battles, delusions, betrayal, death and survival, full of tragicomical absurdity, the sisters’ paths split. Seeking refuge in neighboring Yugoslavia, the twins are caught in a fierce blizzard and lose track of each other.

Ten years later, the sisters live their separate lives in London, each thinking that the other has died in that disastrous winter storm. Ira is happily married leading the kind of bourgeois life she dreaded the most. Kara works for the Bulgarian Secret Services (and the KGB) under the disguise of a humble embassy clerk. On the 5th of March, 1953, Stalin dies, and on that fateful day, Ira and Kara accidentally run into each other in a millenary shop… How much has changed?

About the Author/作者介绍: Alek Popov takes a new approach to this toxic subject. Overcoming old grievances, he writes with a healthy sense of humor (pitch-black at times!) and profound irony, going way beyond the picking of sides in an effort to grasp the internal paradox of human nature. Based on a detailed historical research, the novel creates a broad picture of the times, a unique world, populated by colorful and vivid characters. It is a milestone in that it opens one of the most important historical chapters, especially for that region, allowing it to be examined by modern literature in a comprehensible, yet accessible and exciting way. The ugliness of the period shows even more clearly humanity’s ability to prevail. But it also serves as a warning for the generations to come, recounting their own history in a most unusual voice, through an unprecendented, unforgettable saga.
