THE PALAVEEV SISTERS ON THE ROAD TO THE NEW WORLD(PART TWO)

    Book ID/图书代码: 05765018C00002

English Summary/英文概要: Back in 1944, the war machine keeps turning. The Red Army gets closer and closer to Europe. Lost in the mountains on the border between Bulgaria and Serbia, the twin sisters are left to the mercy ofthe elements and chance. The charm of adventure is long gone, only survival matters.

The story is told in four large segments following the audacious lives of both sisters. The plot unfolds with a comic strip-like dynamic and lightness, although the historical backdrop remains highly authentic. As their life gets more complicated, the sisters grow and evolve from teenagers into young women. Their characters deepen, as do their sexual experiences. The spell of ideology dwindles to give way to a strife for individual freedom – the mark of the imminent 1960’s.

But the thirst for adventure remains.

Saved by an alpine unit of the Bulgarian army, Kara returns to Sofia hoping to reconcile with her parents and seek a way out of her desperation… It turns out to be too late. On her way home, an Allied air-raid commences. A bomb hits the house before her eyes and kills her parents. This severs the last connection to her previous life. Betrayed by the innocent-looking family handmaid, Kara is turned in to the police. During the next air-raid, she manages to escape together with a senior party activist, “Uncle” Angel. In a lurid turn of fate, her newfound mentor reveals his rapacious nature.

Compared with the tough, unrelenting world of her sister, Ira’s story seems more like a fairy tale. She is found by two local boys - unconscious, buried in a cave under the snow. They bring revive her and take her to the nearest Yugoslav partisan unit. There, she meets commander Panther and sparks fly between them. Ira has lost her memory and the partisans give her the nickname Snejana (Snow). After a fierce clash with the Germans, Ira and the wounded Panther find refuge in disused silver mines beneath the Kopaonik Mountains in central Serbia. The brutal reality of war mixes with the enchanted world of dwarfs, wizards and magic. Ira has a passionate, but ill-fated love affair with Panther. Their bliss is short-lived. The call of duty (or rather the fear of commitment) prevails and Panther leaves her to join again the fight. Broken-hearted, Ira finds consolation in the presence of Ralph - a downed British airman, rescued only a day before Panther’s departure. Ralph is the only son of the wealthy whiskey trader Horas Finnegan. He wins her confidence and helps her to gradually recover her memory and her English language skills. During a RAF rescue mission, Ira and Ralph carry out a daring escape from Yugoslavia by air and water. Ralph returns to London married to Ira, to the great surprise of his family.

About the Author/作者介绍: Alek Popov takes a new approach to this toxic subject. Overcoming old grievances, he writes with a healthy sense of humor (pitch-black at times!) and profound irony, going way beyond the picking of sides in an effort to grasp the internal paradox of human nature. Based on a detailed historical research, the novel creates a broad picture of the times, a unique world, populated by colorful and vivid characters. It is a milestone in that it opens one of the most important historical chapters, especially for that region, allowing it to be examined by modern literature in a comprehensible, yet accessible and exciting way. The ugliness of the period shows even more clearly humanity’s ability to prevail. But it also serves as a warning for the generations to come, recounting their own history in a most unusual voice, through an unprecendented, unforgettable saga.
