MIGRATIONS: OPEN HEARTS, OPEN BORDERS
Human migration is among the greatest and most
intractable issues of our time. Hundreds of thousands of
children are exposed to hardship, danger, and cruelty in
migrating alone or with their families from oppression,
violence or poverty to safer places in the world. The death
toll is shocking and shaming. And these safer places may
put up barriers to keep the migrants out.
What can artists do, in this deeply troubled situation? The
International Centre for the Picture Book in Society, based
at the University of Worcester, England, asked illustrator
friends across the world to create an original postcard on
the theme of ’Migrations’, with an illustration of a bird on
one side and a message or greeting on the address side. In
response, beautiful cards came flying in from all corners of
the earth.
The cards formed an installation in BIBIANA, the
International House of Art for Children, in Bratislava,
Slovakia, in September 2017, to coincide with its second
Biennale of Illustration. Plans are in hand for other places
too, including Nami Island, South Korea.
Now a large selection of the postcards is being incorporated
in a very special book, featuring both sides, reproducing the
illustrators’ own messages as well as their artwork. The
variety is astonishing, the imaginative quality is stunning,
the heartfelt nature of the work is both moving and
inspiring. Some of the artists are internationally famous,
some are not well-known – all highlight the positive impact
of the migration of peoples, and show brilliantly how
cultures and ideas flow despite borders, barriers and bans.
Chinese Summary/
(Sandy)
