HALF GONE :OIL, GAS, HOT AIR AND THE GLOBAL ENERGY CRISIS

Oil companies and oil governments have been covering up depletion of the product on which society has come to depend while stoking addiction and holding back alternatives. The oil topping point, the day half all the world’s oil is used up, is not far off. When it arrives, it will trigger soaring prices, the worst-ever energy crisis, and economic chaos. Meanwhile, global warming caused by oil, gas and coal burning is in danger of running out of control. Society will be forced, albeit in deplorable economic conditions, to solve oil depletion with a crash programme to accelerate alternative energy sources. Will it do so with the technologies that can also solve global warming and save the planet?

    Chinese Summary/

Hopefully will inspire people to rely less on oil and to start thinking green before it really is too late.’---The Geographical Magazine, September 2006

A fast-moving, easily readable polemic whose unashamed populism does not obscure the weight of its argument.---The Sunday Times

...a valuable contribution to the library of what is essentially subversive literature… Jeremy Leggett is a fine writer. ---Colin Tudge, The Guardian

About the Author/作者介绍: Jeremy Leggett joined the faculty of Earth Sciences at Imperial College of Science & Technology in 1978, where during an eleven year career he won two major awards for his research on the history of oceans and worked with the oil industry in the UK and abroad. During the mid 1980s he became increasingly concerned about global warming, a process which culminated in his leaving academia and his lucrative oil consulting to join the international environment group Greenpeace. As a campaigner, he has long been involved in the debate over climate change and how to respond to it. The Washington Post has described him as “one of the half-dozen experts most responsible for putting the climate change issue on the international agenda”. He is now Chief Executive of solarcentury, the UK’s largest independent solar electric company, a member of the UK Government’s Renewables Advisory Board and a director of the world’s first private equity investment fund in renewable energy, run by a Swiss bank. .His critically acclaimed account of the first ten years of global warming, The Carbon War, was published by Penguin Press in 1999.
