About the Author/作者介绍： 莱西·鲍德温·史密斯（Lacey Baldwin Smith，1922—2013）
1922年生于美国新泽西州，毕业于普林斯顿大学，先后在普林斯顿大学、麻省理工学院以及西北大学任教，担任历史系与人文系教授。曾获富布赖特奖学金、国家人文学科奖学金、古根海姆学者奖及其他许多学术成果和荣誉，并担任美国艺术和科学学院院士。生前是美国历史学会(American Historical Association)、《美国历史评论》(American Historical Review)、英国研究会议(Conference on British Studies)的会员，并担任《近代史杂志》(Journal of Modern History)的编辑。
生前共著有十余部英国历史相关作品，包括《凯瑟琳·霍华德：愚弄亨利八世的女王》《伊丽莎白的世界》《亨利八世：皇室的面具》《安妮·博林：备受争议的女王》等。
被评价为英国历史研究领域的“扛鼎大家”（Big Name），其作品博学风趣，语言幽默睿智，令许多读者过目难忘。1972年，莱西·鲍德温·史密斯成为英国皇家文学学会会员。
Lacey Baldwin Smith was born in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1922. Following graduate work at Princeton University, he went on to teach there and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Northwestern University, where until his retirement he was Professor of History and Peter B. Ritzma Professor in the Humanities. He continues to teach at Northwestern in an emeritus capacity. Smith is the recipient of two Fulbright awards, two National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and numerous other awards, honors, and academic appointments, including membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Smith passed away September 2013.
