But this is not once upon a time, this is now, and Lord Highfire rules damn all from his mangrove shack in Louisiana’s Honey Island Swamp. Highfire has become plain old Vern and he survived to be the last dragon by keeping his head below the swamp water line and never cutting loose with the fireworks. Every night he sneaks into his mangrove shack to drown his sorrows in vodka and cable shows, and by day he hides out among the alligators. It isn’t much of a life but he’s alive to live it, and Vern is prepared do whatever it takes – even if it’s violent – to preserve his own hide.

Vern’s solitude is threatened by fourteen-year-old delinquent Squib Moreau who stumbles across the dragon’s shack one night, and incredibly lives to tell the tale. But the boy doesn’t snitch and instead weasels himself a job as Vern’s runner to the local store. Against every single one of his better instincts, Vern lets his guard down a little with the kid and finds himself enjoying having someone to shoot the breeze with besides the dumb gators. Time goes by and Vern finds himself looking forward to Squib’s visits so he can regale the kid with tales of his glory days. But when Squib is abducted by a dirty cop and delivered to a drug lord in New Orleans for execution, Vern has a choice. He can either write Squib off as a bad investment of his time, or he can flex his wings, fly on down to New Orleans and put on a display to teach these people not to mess with Lord Highfire’s pets.
