Stefano Massimi’s The Lehmans Trilogy was already an international cult phenomenon when Luca Ronconi brought it on stage by with an all-star cast in January 2015. Since then, there have been several more productions at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan as well as in various other cities, both in Italy and abroad. Oscar Award-winning director Sam Mendes brought it triumphally on stage at the National Theatre in London in June 2018 and the same adaptation will be staged next March 2019 at the Park Avenue Armory in New York.
For the first time, the unabridged version is published in a new edition that also includes the cuts made by Luca Ronconi.
Stefano Massimi’s text has the style and the rhythm of an epic poem, which portrays 150 years of the history of capitalism, spanning from 1844 (when the first of the Lehman brothers, Henry, arrived in the United States) to 2008, when the bank that the family founded in New York declared bankruptcy. As Massimi himself explains, “it shouldn’t be seen as the story of a bank, it is neither a celebration nor a critique. One finds it, rather, a story of the successes and failures of three generations struggling with the traditions of a rapidly changing society.”

STEFANO MASSINI (Florence, 1975) is the most talented Italian playwright, as well as the third artistic director of the Piccolo Teatro in Milan (following in the footsteps of Giorgio Strehler and Luca Ronconi) and its leading dramatist. He has written several plays, including Donna non rieducabile: a piece about Anna Politkovskaja, which has been portrayed in theaters worldwide.
