She has written for the Guardian, the Independent, New Statesman & Society, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Bookforum and the Baffler. Her screenplay, The Spy Who Caught A Cold, was made into a short for Channel 4. She has taught writing at Arvon and the University of Kent, has had three Hawthornden Fellowships, and several Royal Literary Fund Fellowships. She is a dual national (USA/UK) and lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.
