DUCKS, NEWBURYPORT

English Summary/英文概要: “… the fact that I woke up this morning with a whole clump of hair sticking straight out at a right angle from my forehead, proving unicorns do exist, the fact that there are many Norwegian miniature bundt cake pans that I kind of crave, for cupcakes, but I don’t need them, I just want them, the fact that I dreamt I had to eat some dog do and when I woke up I could still taste it…”

Newcomerstown, Ohio. A suburban housewife stands at her kitchen counter and thinks, thinks, thinks, all the while kneading bread, shaping cinnamon buns, latticing cherry pies… The seasons pass, the world ignites around her, and she keeps on baking - trying to find the way, if not to make sense of it all, then at least to hold herself together. A tour de force told in a single sentence, Ducks, Newburyport is nothing less than a revolution in the Great American Novel. A faithful portrait of female experience and the realities of twenty-first century domestic life, Ducks, Newburyport also offers a scorching indictment of Trump-era America and a lament for the way we are sleepwalking into environmental disaster. It’s also very funny. It will leave you simultaneously moved, angry - and gasping with laughter.

Ducks, Newburyport is a heresy and a revelation.

Awards/
― 《纽约时报》Parul Sehgal, New York Times
