English Summary/英文概要： After waking up from disturbing dreams, one morning Andrea discovers his heart is missing. He’s definitely not dead, but is he really alive? He’s merely fading away under the disapproving and distracted gaze of the (many?) women around him, for whom nothing seems to be amiss. If ever there was a man to whom such a thing could happen, it’s Andrea.
His frantic search for similar incidents comes up empty. Not even mythology – the archetype of everything – provides a clue. Then again, if most people’s greatest fear is death, Andrea may have dodged the bullet.
How can a missing heart stop beating? But muscles, bones and tendons aren’t the only things keeping us alive. We are also the product of our relationships and interactions with others.
Unexplained joy, lingering loss, failings, pain and flawed love stories all make us who we are. Could Andrea be unable to die because he is unable to live?

Chiara Valerio (Scauri, 1978) vive a Roma
e a Venezia, è responsabile della narrativa italiana
della casa editrice Marsilio e lavora a Rai
Radio3, dove conduce il programma L’Isola
Deserta ed è consulente per il programma Ad
Alta Voce. Ha studiato e insegnato matematica
per molti anni e ha un dottorato di ricerca in
calcolo delle probabilità. Il suo ultimo libro è
Storia umana della matematica (Einaudi, 2016).
Ha scritto romanzi, racconti, saggi e testi teatrali.
Tra le sue pubblicazioni: A complicare le
cose (robin, 2003), La gioia piccola d’esser quasi
salvi (nottetempo, 2009), Spiaggia libera tutti
(Laterza, 2012), Almanacco del giorno prima
(Einaudi, 2014). Redattore di «Nuovi Argomenti
