NIGHT OF THE BAYONETS: THE TEXEL UPRISING AND HITLER’S REVENGE, APRIL–MAY 1945

In the bnal days of the Second World War, Georgians serving in the Wehrmacht on Texel Island rose up and slaughtered their German masters. Adolf Hitler ordered the island be taken back, and bghting continued for weeks, well after the end of the war.

Eric Lee analyses one of the most exciting yet unknown subplots from the Second World War. Whilst the April 1945 rising was extraordinary and unexpected, its roots can be traced back to early twentieth century Georgia, when the Red Army conquered in 1921.

Despite this, the Georgians that were captured and converted were never truly loyal to the Germans, and many made contact with the local Communist resistance when deployed to the Netherlands. They took their chance to rise up against their German leaders on Texel Island, massacring 400 soldiers in a matter of a few hours with knives and bayonets.

Upon hearing the news, Hitler ordered the island be retaken, and a bloody battle ensued.

On 20th May, 12 days after VE Day, Canadian forces landed on the island and ended the slaughter. Just 200 Georgians survived.

Lee goes deep into this fascinating story, explaining the rebellion’s origins, detailing the slaughter, and discovering its legacies, in a compelling book.

(Sandy)
