Of course war, as Makanin reminds readers on several of Asan’s pages, is an absurd venture. You can’t understand it, says Zhilin, and there’s no logic. In short, truth slips and myths gain strength as Zhilin attempts to make sense of events, his actions, and his life. Asan is not about the kinds of war truths we expect from newspapers. It’s about how people try to order chaos by transforming war’s realities, commodities as elusive as sun bunnies, into myth. Its messages about money, truth, and war are important reflections of sociopolitical life in today’s world.

Vladimir Makanin (1937-2017) was among the best-known Russian contemporary writers. Born in the Urals, he was trained as a mathematician and later as a filmmaker. His first passion was chess and then the cinema, but he made his name with his highly individual stories which won him instant fame among the Russian intelligentsia during the years of the Thaw. Makanin became widely known with the publication in 1982 of his Forebears, a novel about a faith healer. Many of his novels have been published in translation in USA, Germany, France, Spain, Eastern Europe and elsewhere. His Baize-covered Table with Decanter won the Russian Booker Prize in 1993. He spent most of his later years in Krasny, near Rostov-on-Don. In 2007, Makanin headed the jury for the Big Book award. The following year, he was the recipient. Makanin’s writing style may be categorized as realist. His forte lies in depicting the psychological impact of everyday life experiences.
