They tell us how strong its forces are, and what its fundamental laws can do: the strength of gravity, of magnetism, the speed of light and the masses of the smallest particles of matter. About the Author/作者介绍： 约翰·D·巴罗（John D．Barrow），天体物理学家，现任剑桥大学应用数学与理论物理系数学科学研究教授。巴罗1974年毕业于达勒姆大学，取得数学和物理学士学位，1977年获得牛津大学天体物理学博士学位，1999年成为英国剑桥大学莱尔学院的教授，教授应用数学和理论物理学，同时担任“千年数学项目”（MMP）的主任。巴罗曾先后荣获洛克天文学奖、英国皇家学会授予的法拉第奖以及皇家格拉斯哥哲学学会的开尔文奖章。

John D. Barrow is Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Director of the Millennium Mathematics Project at Cambridge University. He is the author of many books on the significance of modern developments in science.
