English Summary/英文概要： The Jesuit Matteo Ricci, widely known in China as “Li Madou”, was the first and most illustrious of the early Jesuit missionaries of the China Mission. He is considered the most outstanding cultural mediator between China and the West of all time. The book is the most thorough biography of Ricci ever written, well documented and detailed. In its totality, it offers a deeply human story in a very readable style which is both engrossing and captivating. The author follows Ricci’s travels in China in detail, providing a portrait of Ming China and of the most important issues related to cultural exchanges between China and the West. She shows with clarity how Ricci implemented his ideas of “cultural accommodation” both into his life and into his writings addressed to the Chinese élite. This biography is the first to stress Ricci’s scientific work and the work of the most important Christian converts, such as Xu Guangxi who translated Euclid’s Elements together with Ricci. In addition, it documents aspects of the history of science in China and the West as well as the different cultural approaches towards religious and philosophical issues. It gives an exemplary introduction to the history of the relationships between Western Christianity and China.

瑪提歐‧利奇（Matteo Ricci，1552年10月6日—1610年5月11日），著名義大利耶穌會傳教士、學者。明朝萬曆年間他來到中國進行傳教工作，並定居於此。其中文名為利瑪竇，號西泰，又號清泰、西江。在中國生活期間，他頗受當時明朝士大夫的敬重，被尊稱為“泰西儒士”。他是天主教在中國傳教的先驅者之一，同時也是首位飽讀中國文學並對其進行鑽研的西方學者。除了傳播天主教教義外，利瑪竇還廣交中國的官員和社會名流，傳播西方天文、數學、地理等科學技術知識；他與徐光啟等人成功地翻譯出了歐幾理德得的《幾何原本》。他的眾多著述不僅對中西交流作出了重要貢獻，對日本和朝鮮半島上的國家認識西方文明也產生了重要影響。

About the Author/作者介绍： 作者Michela Fontana，1950年出生於米蘭。身為記者的她負責為多家義大利主流雜誌及報刊撰稿，同時，Michela在數學領域也頗有造詣。1996年，她所編著的《Percorsi calcolati》一書，對於數學的重要性加以了著重的闡述，由於該書對於科普領域所做的貢獻，1998年她榮獲了Pirelli International Award。作者曾在北京工作生活多年，正是這段時間，她對利瑪竇的生平事蹟進行了研究。目前居住於瑞士日內瓦。
Michela Fontana (born in Milan in 1950), a journalist by profession, a mathematician by training, contributed to the leading Italian magazines and dayly newspapers. She won twice the Glaxo prize for science journalism and was a recipient of the Knight Science Journalism Fellowships (MIT, Cambridge USA) in 1990- 1991. In 1996 she published the book Percorsi calcolati, a book on the importance of mathematics, which won the Pirelli International Award for popularization of science in 1998. She lived for many years in Beijing, where she conducted researches on Ricci’s work and contributed to Italian newspapers. She now lives in Geneva, Switzerland.
