English Summary/英文概要: English title: Madness and Literature: The History of an Elective Affinity from the Theatre of Dionysus to the Twentieth Century
This book analyses some great literary characters who are
characterized by their madness, within the internal dynamics
and/or a consideration of the social group to which they
belong, and in relation to the concepts of mental illness of
different historical periods. The point of departure is Greek
tragedy, where madness is seen as an external (divine)
agent which does not involve a human being’s personality;
but in Euripides’ Bacchae there is a complex relationship
between the madness of the impious individual and the madness
inherent in Dionysiac religion. In Aristophanes’ comedy, on the other
hand, where the human being aspires to become a god, a concept
of madness as an abundance of emotion and imagination begins to
emerge. But the century in which this concept reaches its zenith is
the seventeenth century, with the boundless, infectious creativity of
Don Quixote, and the painful experience of King Lear, who achieves
an understanding of the world and its values only through madness.
