POSEIDON’S BULL: The Mysterious Rise and Fall of the Minoans

POSEIDON’S BULL: The Mysterious Rise and Fall of the Minoans. At the turn of the last century, excavations by Sir Arthur Evans proved the existence of a brilliant culture, an empire on the island of Crete, which ruled the Aegean a thousand years before Athens. Believing he had found the legendary palace of King Minos, Evans dubbed the rediscovered people "Minoans." And yet, despite Evan’s achievement, the Minoans remain shrouded in mystery. Who were they? How did they disappear? How did they build sophisticated structures with plumbing and ventilation so long before the classical structures of ancient Athens? Was it a matriarchal culture as the wall paintings suggest? Are the Minoans and the Atlanteans from the fabled Atlantis one and the same? Drawing upon myth, archaeology, science, and politics, Barrett re-imagines the story of the rise and catastrophic fall of the Minoans, possibly as a result of one or more massive tsunamis caused by the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history on the island of Thera over 3500 years ago.
