FIREPOWER

Over the past decade bushfires have reasserted themselves as environmental, social, and political presences in Australia. Since understanding fire is a study in context — fire is what its circumstances make of it — understanding this recent outbreak of bushfires requires an explanation of their setting, both environmental and social. A previous history by the author (Burning Bush) surveyed the scene up through the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983. This volume carries the story through the 2003 bushfires that ravaged the Australia Alps and burned into Canberra. The organising conceit is the history of and recent controversies over controlled burning, which might be aptly symbolised by the firestick. The book traces the significance of the firestick through Australian history, beginning with Aboriginal usage, and the subsequent passing of the firestick to rural colonists and then to foresters. Each transfer kindled a public debate over suitable fire practices, with the firestick as symbol and synecdoche for larger issues about what the Australian land should be and how Australians should live on it. The central message of the text is that contemporary Australia needs not to extinguish the firestick but to adapt it, as Australians have so often, to new circumstances, especially concerns over biodiversity, nature protection, and the urban (or exurban) fringe that fires have increasingly threatened. The controversy over proper fire practices has recently engulfed every country with wildlands (with special vehemence, the US and Canada), and Australia’s story speaks directly to those shared concerns since Australia alone retained controlled burning as it industrialised.
