Everyone needs a cool older sister who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.
What do you do when there is no perfect answer, no great mentor to follow, and no guarantee that your choices will work out? Kyoungsun Lim has spent more than a decade listening to people worry about exactly these things through her columns, radio shows, talks, and advice sessions. Her answers have made her a trusted “older sister” to countless Korean readers: warm but refreshingly direct, and never afraid to tell you when you might be making life harder than it needs to be.
In this book, Lim boils down what she has learned about living on your own terms into five keywords: Spontaneity, Magnanimity, Honesty, Diligence, and Fairness. Be generous in love, diligent at work, honest in relationships, fair in how you see the world, and above all, make choices because you want them, not because money, convention, or other people tell you to. Drawing on twelve years in the corporate world, and now as a full-time writer, and thousands of conversations about work, love, failure, and relationships, Lim offers practical wisdom grounded firmly in real life.
Her advice is reassuringly unsentimental: there is no perfect choice, no job that is enjoyable all the time, and if you never want to get hurt, you may never begin anything at all. But Lim has no interest in becoming anyone’s guru; she simply tells you how she sees things and leaves you free to agree, disagree, or find your own way. Candid, witty, and companionable, I Am Ready to Embrace the Hurt feels less like being told how to live and more like sitting down for tea with the smart, straight-talking older sister everyone could use once in a while.
Chinese Summary/
