Sarah Trevelyan and her sick father are living a cold life of Dickensian want. No money for medicine. Little money for food. And the rent is due. But Sarah vaguely remembers life when they were The Trvelyans, living in Darkwater Hall with servants and plenty. She still nurses a kernel of haughtiness even in her present extremity. Then pride loses Sarah her job, and she is forced to go hat-in-hand to Lord Azrael — the very demon who stole their life from her grandfather with one hand of cards. To her amazement, and to her father’s horror, she learns to like this man who is now her master. And she loves her work, cataloging books and assisting in Azrael’s laboratory.
She very quickly begins to suspect that Azrael is more than he appears, or that he wants to appear. And she does not know if he can be considered good or evil. But Azrael offers her a second chance. A chance to save her father’s life. A chance to live again in reasonable freedom from want. And a chance to make amends for all the wrongs committed by her family.
One hundred years later, Tom is living in the little house that Sarah called home in her years of destitution. He dreams of escaping the town bullies and attending school at Darkwater Hall where his mother is a cleaning lady. He meets a strange girl in town who stands up for him. They quickly become friends. And when Tom is offered a job assisting the new chemistry teacher at Darkwater, she has a strange tale to tell, indeed.
