DINNER WITH ANNA KARENINA: A NOVEL
Book ID/图书代码: 06840005B12562
English Summary/英文概要: And the worst of it is, you understand, that I can’t leave him: there are children, and I am bound. Yet I can’t live with him . . ." Immediately the words from Anna Karenina take on a significance for the women who have gathered over good food and good wine for their first book club meeting of the year. These six very different women are not quite friends, not quite strangers but, bonded by their love of literature, they share a deep understanding of one another -- or so they think.
On this night they are stunned when the most envied and privileged member of the group announces that she is divorcing her perfect husband for reasons she cannot, will not share. That such an idyllic marriage could be so vulnerable mystifies them, leaving them to speculate about what happened -- and what, in their own imperfect relationships, would constitute the ultimate betrayal.
Over the course of a year, through cathartic discussions about their favorite novels, they reveal the burdens, bitterness and painful truths they have long been hiding, and in doing so, try to find the courage to open a new chapter in their own lives.
Written with a refreshing insight, Dinner with Anna Karenina takes an absorbing look at the complex lives and friendships of modern women. From their concealed rivalries with each other to their ongoing trials with husbands and lovers, award-winning author Gloria Goldreich’s lyrical narrative captures their individual voices and struggles, with poignancy, humor and truth.
Every month they gather over good food and wine to discuss their favorite books: six very different women-not quite friends, not quite strangers. Enid is a successful psychiatrist, brilliant yet inexplicably dissatisfied; Donna, torn between two lovers, dreams of family but fears commitment; Rina’s destructive fantasies may be her downfall; Pat and Hedy are sisters as dissimilar as they are competitive; and Connie is the envy of all her friends with the perfect career, the perfect family, the perfect life. Brought together by their love of literature, they share a deep understanding of one another?or so they think.
Then Connie, the woman seemingly so happy, announces that she is divorcing her husband for reasons she refuses to share.
The ensuing drama that unfolds forces each woman to explore the secrets shaping and burdening her life as they speculate about what could have happened-and what, in their own circumstances, would constitute the ultimate betrayal.

Gloria mines the trials of old age with protagonist Elaine Gordon, an acclaimed artist who finds herself at seas in a life she no longer recognizes. Elaine has spent the better part of a lifetime devoted to her soulmate Neil—overwhelmed with grief at his recent passing, Elaine sees in the time left her nothing but a shadow of her former blessings.
Anxious to console their mother in her time of grief, Elaine’s four grown children urge her to put everything on hold and spend some healing time with them. But visiting each unique and complicated child opens Elaine’s eyes to the fact that the children she raised have become adults she hardly knows.
As Elaine tries to bridge the physical and emotional miles, her eyes are opened to the startling truths of her own family, what she must do to come to terms with the lives of her children—and a future that’s completely, wonderfully . . . hers.
