JOHN PAUL II : MAN OF HISTORY

Book ID/图书代码: 03540006B02479

English Summary/英文概要: The response to John Paul II’s death in the spring of 2005 surprised even the leaders of the Catholic Church; never before had so many millions come to Rome to pay their respects to a dead Pope. The record-breaking crowds were a fitting end to a pontificate that had been setting new records for a quarter of a century. Edward Stourton attempts to make sense of a remarkable life, and to rescue John Paul the man from the myths that have grown up around the cult of John Paul the Great. To many of his admirers he became a plaster-caste saint, and to many of his detractors he was an irredeemably wicked old man in a funny white suit. The reality is an infinitely more complex and compelling story. Karol Wojtyla was a passionate man of extraordinary vision and determination, but he could also be stubborn, ill-tempered, and sometimes showed woeful judgements about those he gathered around him. He was a bundle of paradoxes; a high intellectual who also believed in peasant cults, a moral conservative but a social radical, a champion of freedom who cracked down on dissent within the Church, the most modern of popes in the way he conveyed his message but the most traditional in his ideas. His life was touched by the great currents of the history of the twentieth century; at first hand he saw war, Nazi occupation and eastern Europe’s submission to Stalinism. That history formed him, and explains much about the way he ran the Church. And he formed history in return, playing a pivotal role in the collapse of communism and leaving such a powerful mark on the Church that every modern debate about Catholicism comes back to his legacy. There was a final paradox at the heart of this giant of our times; John Paul was a world-class celebrity, and he was probably seen by more people than any other human being had ever been before, yet his own life was a curiously lonely one; he was orphaned when he was young, cut off from friendship by his high office, and when he died there was not a single member of his close family to say farewell. His last testament revealed that he had almost no personal possessions at all. A wonderfully, insightful, involving and rewarding look at the life of a man who was not only one of the most important men of the last thirty years of the 20th century but who became, in his last days, a living symbol of the Christian response to suffering and an inspiration to billions.
