THE CYPRESS TREE

Kamin Mohammadi left Iran in 1979, aged nine. As an adult she finally returned to rediscover her country, culture and family and since then she has been returning regularly, re-establishing her relationship with the place and its people, and teaching herself to become truly bi-cultural, both British and Iranian. THE CYPRESS TREE is her story of exile and return, and an investigation into modern Iran with all its glories and trials, its wonders and contradictions.
Growing up in the UK, Kamin embraced all that her new life had to offer, from her Sussex boarding school to the murky nightclubs of London and a career forged in the magazine offices of Soho. But she never forgot her Iranian childhood, and 18 years on – filled with both longing for her homeland and fear of what she would find there – Kamin returned to Iran.
Her family is spread across many social strata – from the urban sophisticates in Tehran to Kurdish mountain villagers, so she has been able to investigate many faces of this intriguing nation. What she found there a decade ago made her fall in love, with the grace of the culture, the elaborate courtesies, the beauty of the language and the poetry in the Iranian soul. But this is not just a love story: THE CYPRESS TREE is the story of how modern Iran has come into being – a family history that is also the country’s recent history.
Kamin offers a personal and anecdotal account of three generations of her characterful and colourful extended family; and through their experiences she has produced an insightful analysis of the recent social and political history of Iran. Kamin details the way that, after the revolution, women’s rights were slowly chipped away, particularly through the actions of the Basij or Moral Police. She discusses the changes that occurred during the bloody, eight-year Iran-Iraq war which followed, the slow moves made towards social and political freedom after it had finished, and the recent re-tightening of controls under Ahmadinejad.
Iran is still a country caught between its ancient traditions and modern desires, a repressive religious regime and a young population clamouring for freedom. In particular, claims Mohammadi, it is the women of Iran – smart, highly educated and privately sharp-tongued – who are incubating future revolution and who will one day step forward and demand a new social order.

Chinese Summary/
(ANDY)

Awards/获奖情况:“The heartfelt tale of a family shaped by the tumultuous drama of Twentieth-century Iran, The Cypress Tree is a profoundly affecting meditation on the shattering experience of exile.” - Justin Marozzi

“The Cypress Tree is vivid testimony to Kamin Mohammadi’s ebullient, irrepressible family whose courage to endure carries them through revolution, exile and return to triumphant survival… A memoir to inspire.” - Aminatta Forna, author of The Memory of Love

“Kamin’s father courted her mother with a Mohammadi rose each day; a slow, elegant, romantic ritual combining his name, his land, and his love. His daughter does the same, wooing us, page by page, until we too become besotted.” - Justine Hardy author of The Wonder House
