THE MALICE BOX

Book ID/图书代码: 06580006B02601

English Summary/英文概要: In post-9/11 New York, a series of seemingly unrelated events launch news executive Robert Reckliss on a race against time to save his family and potentially millions of others from destruction.
At first the race seems to be a kind of game for grown-ups created by his sometime friend Adam Hale, who delights in setting up provocative riddles and scavenger hunts for his acquaintances. But Adam vanishes, a mining company executive kills himself, and soon Robert is pulled into the hunt for a mysterious weapon of awesome power that lies hidden somewhere in Manhattan.
The Gnosis or Ma’rifat Engine is powered by the psyche of those in its vicinity. It can only be triggered or disarmed by individuals in a heightened spiritual or psychological state. Two such individuals - known as the Unicorn and the Minotaur - are currently in Manhattan, each seeking the device for his own purposes, one good, one evil.
Guided by Adam’s lover Terri, a gifted psychic, and with the help of his troubled wife Katherine, Robert works through a series of riddles, provocations and challenges, each of which is associated with a particular place in Manhattan, and each of which spells out part of an ancient spiritual secret.
All those involved in the chase find their lives are linked by the first, accidental discharge of the Ma’rifat just over a year earlier, on August 14 2003: the day New York and most of the northeast United States was hit by a massive electrical blackout. Robert begins to doubt his own sanity even as he progresses towards the solution to the riddle Adam has set him, which lies deep within himself and his past.
The story culminates in the most beautiful abandoned subway station in the world, under New York’s City Hall, as Robert confronts the Minotaur, the Unicorn and the Malice Box itself.

“One of the best novels I have read in a very long time. A thrilling journey of self discovery. . . . Splendidly rewarding.”---Shots Magazine (London)

Owing an obvious debt to Dan Brown’s megablockbuster The Da Vinci Code, Langfield’s ambitious debut incorporates elements of supernatural mystery, Dante-esque journey and apocalyptic thriller, but the pieces fail to come together into a satisfying whole. With a powerful alchemical weapon primed to detonate in a week’s time, Robert Reckliss must unlock seven puzzles and find seven keys hidden around Manhattan before the Malice Box unleashes some unspecified evil on the inhabitants of New York City. Standing in his way is the Brotherhood of Iwnw (pronounced yoonu), otherworldly scavengers of the soul bent on remaking civilization with themselves as overlords. Two-dimensional characters, contrived situations and a mishmash of plot-threads—a potentially world-altering discovery involving a recovered document written by Isaac Newton, secret societies, gateways between worlds, America’s war against terrorism, Christian and Islamic mysticism, ley lines—make this one of the weaker contenders in the crowded religious thriller field.
