English Summary/英文概要： This is the story of Yevgenii Yeremin, an orphan who after the harrowing experience of a Stalingrad orphanage in the 1940s, gains a scholarship to military flying school and an escape from the life he was born into. His emotions, stripped bare by the experiences of his youth, narrow into naked ambition and a single-minded but heartfelt belief in his country and its glory. In 1952 he is sent to Korea, to participate in the Chinese military support for North Korea against the UN forces. This necessarily anonymous activity (the Soviet government never admitted to being in Korea) only heightens his desire for wider acknowledgment, and his unparalleled skill at flying coupled with eyes that can spot an enemy aircraft from miles on the horizon, thrusts him forward through the hierarchy to the ranks of an ace fighter pilot. However it is this hunger for recognition - his driving force - that causes him to commit a grievous error of judgement and after his fall from grace in the eyes of the USSR he is banished to the bleak skies above the Arctic, flying lonely reconnaissance missions. That is, until the 1960s and the beginning of the space race. Suddenly once again men who can fly are in demand: men who can be trusted to handle an aircraft in the most difficult environments, men who are prepared to risk everything for a chance at being written into history.
