ON THE FIFTH DAY is the story of Thomas Knight, a maverick high school teacher who is shocked out of his professional problems by the death of his estranged brother, Ed, the young priest killed in the Philippines. Though raised Catholic, Thomas has long since abandoned his faith; having to deal with the priests who were his brother’s friends makes his cautious probing into what happened to Ed all the more uncomfortable. But when he hears official whispers that his brother was connected to a terrorist organization, Thomas resolves to get to the bottom of the matter. Through his investigation, he quickly learns that there are powerful people who want the matter left well alone.
His quest takes him first to Italy—and his brother’s research into an early Christian fish symbol—then on to Japan where he reconnects with his ex-wife, by which time Thomas is convinced that his brother was pursuing images of a legged fish and their ties to ancient religion, including Christianity. Thomas, like his brother, becomes convinced that the fish was not only real, it is also still alive. Ed had been trying to find what might be “the missing link” -- living proof of evolution, which was also part of his theological pursuit of harmonious balance between faith in God and science.
As he makes his cautious alliances and dodges attempts on his life, Thomas becomes certain that his brother found what he was looking for, and that someone with military connections attempted to destroy him and the evidence in a carefully planned attack disguised to look like an air-strike against a terrorist training camp. The final showdown on the white sands of a Philippine beach surrounded by ominously blood-red water pits Thomas against an enemy whose fundamentalist convictions make him as merciless as he is lethal. Thomas is finally able to make sense of what the Jesus fish means, but whether that knowledge will somehow keep him alive is another matter.
A.J. Hartley’s ON THE FIFTH DAY is the politically-charged, controversial follow-up to THE MASK OF ATREUS, and it uses the same explosive blend of historical fact and speculative fiction to create a spectacular international thriller.
