WIND AND FIRE
Book ID/图书代码: 12691006B03290
English Summary/英文概要: WIND AND FIRE is the dramatic story of a fiery young Russian girl, Lydia Ivanova, and her desperate struggle to survive in the tumultuous war-torn China of 1928.
Lydia and her beautiful but feckless mother are exiles from the Russian Revolution, penniless outsiders in the unforgiving society of the colonial International Settlement. Lydia saves them from complete destitution by resorting to thieving. In doing so, she has to risk everything by trading with the criminal fraternity in the Chinese old town, dominated by its savage triads and tongs.
It is in the old Chinese town that she meets and falls in love with Chang An Lo, an idealistic Chinese Communist who fights with single-minded courage for everything he believes in. He and Lydia are on the opposite sides of a great political and social divide. Their love for each other is an unforgivable and shameful act in the eyes of both the Europeans and the Chinese communities, yet they will not give each other up. But behind the polite scenes of sterile respectability in the International Settlement, evil stalks as ruthlessly as in the secretive heart of the triads.
Chang saves Lydia’s life, and when he is wounded she shelters him in secret. But she is made to pay for this by the Black Snake tong. She becomes their hunted prey.
Lydia is appalled when her mother marries a respectable English journalist to escape from poverty. Now she is finally forced to make choices. Between the fugitive Communist she loves and the successful life she once dreamed of.
Opium, triads, kidnap, death and torture emerge within the claustrophobic colonial world of Junchow. But this exciting, atmospheric and deeply moving story is essentially about a young girl’s moral awakening and her battle to be with the man she loves.
