TODAS LAS FAMILIAS FELICES (ALL THE HAPPY FAMILIES)
Book ID/图书代码: 02330006B04782
English Summary/英文概要: In these masterly vignettes, Fuentes explores Tolstoy’s classic observation that “happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” In “A Family Like Any Other,” each member of the Pagan family lives in isolation, despite sharing a tiny house. In “The Mariachi’s Mother,” the limitless devotion of a woman is revealed as she secretly tends to her estranged son’s wounds. “Sweethearts” reunites old lovers unexpectedly and opens up the possibilities for other lives and other loves. These are just a few of the remarkable stories in Happy Families, but they all inhabit Fuentes’s trademark Mexico, where modern obsessions bump up against those of the mythic past, and the result is a triumphant display of the many ways we reach out to one another and find salvation through irrepressible acts of love.
In this spectacular translation, the acclaimed Edith Grossman captures the full weight of Fuentes’s range. Whether writing in the language of the street or in straightforward, elegant prose, Fuentes gives us stories connected by love, including the failure of love–between spouses, lovers, parents and children, siblings. From the Mexican presidential palace to the novels of the poor and the vast expanse of humanity in between, Happy Families is a magnificent portrait of modern life in all its complicated beauty, as told by one of the world’s most celebrated writers.

Awards/获奖情况:歐美文壇近日最夯話題書 Sixteen dramatic vignettes involving contemporary Mexican families -- or people in social arrangements standing in for traditional families -- are linked by poetic "choruses" composed in free verse. The juxtapositions are typical of Fuentes: These are narratives focused deeply on his country’s contemporary situation while simultaneously looking back into the traditions of Western letters and expressing themselves in the idiom of continental modernism. ---Los Angeles Times ,2008/10/22
Kipling bookended his stories with apocryphal poems; Fuentes, in a more classical mode, gives each story a coda in the form of a chorus who, in a woeful, mocking or ironic tone, comments on the story’s theme. The last coda, however, appended to "Eternal Father," is called "Choruscodaconrad". It is merely four words long, but serves, dramatically and precisely, to conclude and gloss the entire book.---The Guardian,2008/10/18
This is an exacting literary journey. But there are, as always, magic and poetry in Fuentes’ prose (not overlooking the very accomplished and natural translation of it by Edith Grossman) that make the journey worthwhile.---Times,2008/10/9
