希沙姆•馬塔爾出生在紐約，父母是利比亞人，父親為聯合國利比亞工作組工作。因遭到卡紮菲獨裁迫害，馬塔爾一家流落他國，他的童年在的黎波里和開羅度過，最後在倫敦完成學業。而他的父親在開羅被埃及員警秘密逮捕後遣送回利比亞。這些經歷都成為了馬塔爾的寫作素材。馬塔爾現在住在倫敦，擔任巴納德學院的副教授。
Hisham Matar was born in New York City to Libyan parents and spent his childhood first in Tripoli and then in Cairo. His first novel, IN THE COUNTRY OF MEN, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, the Guardian First Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. It won six international literary awards, including the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best First Book award for Europe and South Asia, the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize, and the inaugural Arab American Book Award. It has been translated into twenty-eight languages. His second novel ANATOMY OF A DISAPPEARANCE was published in 2011. Matar lives in London and serves as associate professor at Barnard College in New York City.
