SEASON OF THE WITCH: A NOVEL
Book ID/图书代码: 03540006B08805
English Summary/英文概要: Gabriel Blackstone is a cool, hip, thoroughly 21st Century Londoner with an unusual talent. A computer hacker by trade, he is - by inclination - a remote viewer; someone whose unique gifts enable him to enter the thoughts of others. But this is something he only does with the greatest reluctance - until he is contacted by an ex-lover who begs him to use his gift to find her step-son, last seen months earlier in the company of two sisters. And so Gabriel visits Monk House in Chelsea, a place where time seems to stand still. Its living room is filled with the perfume of roses, African masks line the walls and everywhere - on doors, on walls, on ceilings even - the mysterious coded symbol of cross and circle dominates. As the dog days of summer turn into a cold and hostile winter, Gabriel becomes increasingly bewitched by the house, and by its owners, the beautiful, enigmatic Monk sisters - one of whom is a deadly killer, and who will stop at nothing to protect a terrifying secret that is as old as time itself. "Season of the Witch" is an extraordinary Gothic thriller that takes on big themes - love, death, alchemy, the power of the human mind to transform and transcend reality - and wraps them into a thriller narrative that will beguile and entrance all who turn its pages.

Awards/获奖情况: the World Book Day Spread the Word winner 09-3-9 Lily
*Season of the Witch (Bantam), by South African-born journalist Natasha Mostert, is the World Book Day Spread the Word winner. A psychological thriller-cum-gothic novel, it won 25% of the public vote on "an alternative reading agenda", and the author was presented with a £5,000 cheque at the World Book Day party at Waterstone’s Piccadilly. She chose to donate the money to CPAU - Fighting for Peace, an organisation that teaches Afghan women to box. Photo: Natasha Mostert (centre) with her editor, Selina Walker of Transworld, and Neil Jewsbury, Chair of World Book Day and Commercial Director of Waterstone’s.
Mostert paid tribute to her editor, Selina Walker, and said of the book: "The premise is that 21st-century man is losing his ability to remember because of all the technological tools at his disposal. We can hardly remember our own mobile phone numbers. In contrast, our ancestors had muscular memories: Simplicius was able to recite Virgil backwards. Seneca the Elder, who was born in 54 BC, was able to listen to a list of two thousand names and then repeat them in exact order."
The book-to-talk-about poll was carried out to bring to light hidden gems amongst the thousands of books published, and to provide an alternative reading agenda to that dictated by critics and prize juries. Since the campaign was launched on the World Book Day website in November, more than 8,000 book-lovers have voted online on the "talkability" merits of a list of 50 titles, selected by an expert panel of judges. The public’s shortlist of 10 was revealed at the end of January. Mostert’s was voted "the perfect nightmare".
