English Summary/英文概要： Not since Coleridge’s 1798 poem "The Rime of The Ancient Mariner" has
literature provided such an in depth exploration of the interaction between
humankind and one of the world’s greatest birds, the albatross. Carl Safina’s
Eye of the Albatross is a wise and wondrous ode to the albatross and the
surprising links humans and other marine wildlife have to them. Eye of the
Albatross embarks readers upon an oceanic journey with Amelia, a Laysan
albatross, while informing readers of the diverse ways the albatross fits into
the human and marine world. Explorers and hunters first probed the remote
realms of the albatross while searching for fame and riches. Safina probes
even further by taking readers inside the bodies of albatross to illuminate the
impressive architecture behind birds built to glide for thousands of miles.
From here, he goes on to describe the similarly shocking skills of other
marine wildlife, such as physical endurance exceptional enough that
penguins can dive and hunt in the frigid darkness of the Antarctic waters.
Safina’s narrative is based upon extensive observations of albatross and those
involved in the research and exploitation of these birds. Via discussions of
ecology, natural history, evolution, biodiversity, fisheries that endanger the
albatross, and well-intentioned eco-tourism, Safina makes marine science
and the story of the albatross an eye-opening literary event.
