ENGLEBY

Book ID/图书代码: 00200007B12165

English Summary/英文概要: The narrator is Engleby, an undergraduate at Cambridge in the 70’s. He is a strange character, a loner and outsider, very much on the fringes of life. He is not particularly pleasant but he is engaging, intelligent and funny. However, there is always something missing from his accounts of his life and the reader can never be sure if they are missing some details. Engleby provides a disarmingly frank account of English education. Engleby can be read as a lament for a generation and the country it failed. It is also a poignant account of the frailty of human consciousness.
Roger Lewis, Daily Express
`Electrifying... [Engleby] hangs together beautifully’
Allan Massie, Scotsman
’Evidence of Faulks’s remarkable empathy and mastery of the novelist’s art... Compelling, disturbing and significant... A remarkable achievement’
Mail on Sunday
`Engleby contains much of brilliance; Faulks turns out to be an unnervingly good ventriloquist... and a born thriller writer.’
Spectator
`What is perhaps most impressive in this convincing novel is that no matter how much we find out about Mike, he remains as indecipherable as white noise.’
Waterstone’s Books Quarterly
`His most assured novel since Birdsong... Funny enough to cause you to make an exhibition of yourself in public places, but it is humour of the blackest variety.’
Jane Shilling, Sunday Telegraph
’Engleby is distinguished by a remarkable intellectual energy... The combination of serious purpose and playful execution is intensely exhilarating’
Scotland on Sunday
`Both repellent and magnetic, Michael Engleby [is]... Faulks’s most daring creation yet’
The Times
`Witty, poignant, Engleby is as cold as a Fenland wind, clever as a Cambridge don’
Good Housekeeping
`Instantly and edgily entertaining... A brilliantly moody book that kicks open a nest of questions about education, politics and personal motivation’
Guardian
`Engleby himself is the most vivid personality Faulks has yet devised... This novel is a significant departure for Faulks, and the new terrain suits him well’
