ROMAN’S JOURNEY

Roman Halter is an optimistic and boisterous schoolboy in 1939, when he and his family gather behind their net curtains to watch the Volksdeutsch neighbours in their small town in western Poland greet the arrival of Hitler’s armies. Within days, the family home has been seized, 12-year-old Roman is a slave of the local, and, returning from an errand, silently witnesses his Jewish classmates being bayoneted to death by soldiers at the edge of town. And there begins the journey—first into the Lodz ghetto, the on to Auschwitz, then Stutthof and Dresden—a remarkable six-year journey through some of the darkest caverns of Nazi Europe. Roman tells his indelible story with a simplicity and grace that allow the extraordinary facts of his suffering and survival to speak for themselves.

Chinese Summary/中文概要: 1939年的Roman Halter还是个乐观、淘气的男学生,在波兰东部的小城镇中,当他和他的家人躲在窗帘背后监视Volksdeutsch(在塞尔维亚和克罗地亚东部的班塔特地区、匈牙利和罗马尼亚西部的希本巴根地区里,居住着泛德意志人,这些人和德国和奥地利的德意志人同宗同族,由于没有在当时德国境内,因此被称为Volksdeutsch )的邻居时,正好被希特勒的军队印入眼帘。
