THE BELIEVERS

A comic, tragic, supremely entertaining novel about one family’s struggles with the consolations of faith and the trials of doubt.

When New York radical lawyer Joel Litvinoff is felled by a stroke, his wife Audrey uncovers a secret that forces her to re-examine her ideas about him and their forty-year marriage.

Joel’s children will soon have to come to terms with this unsettling discovery themselves, but for the meantime, they are grappling with their own dilemmas.

Rosa, a disillusioned revolutionary, has found herself drawn into the world of Orthodox Judaism and is now being pressed to make a commitment to religion.

Karla, an unhappily married social worker, is falling in love with the owner of a newspaper concession in the hospital where she works. Ne’er-do-well Lenny is back on drugs again. In the course of battling their own demons and each other, every member of the family is called upon to re-examine long-held articles of faith and to decide what - if anything - they still believe in.

Chinese Summary/

"... a darkly buoyant book, full of life and irritation and humour and aching disappointment. It is, in other words, a book about a family, and a terrific one."---New York Review of Books

"[Heller] is an extraordinarily entertaining writer, and this novel showcases her copious gifts, including a scathing, Waugh-like wit; an unerring ear for the absurdities of contemporary speech; and a native-born Brit’s radar for class and status distinctions...combined with her hilarious evocation of the radical-chic world the Litvinoffs inhabit, her understanding of the Darwinian mathematics of familial politics...makes the reader look forward to her next foray into fiction."---Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"... even the most painful [moments], constantly vibrate with Heller’s wit, her steely attention to our delicate egos and desperate longings. [...] THE BELIEVERS charts out a terrain all of its own. If you haven’t read Heller yet, prepare to be converted."---The Washington Post

"One of the outstanding novels of the year", eclipsing even her acclaimed NOTES ON A SCANDAL..."It’s funny and elegant (...) It’s never predictable and it’s all totally believable. It shows that Zoe Heller has some pretty substantial abilities."---The Sunday Times

"There’s a ferocious wit and intelligence at work here and it’s a memorable portrait she’s drawn...THE BELIEVERS is quite a piece of work"---The Evening Standard

"... an astonishingly well-observed slow burner, its virtuoso prose compressed and beautiful. Zoë Heller possesses true brilliance as a writer... THE BELIEVERS is the work of a writer at the top of her game."---The Guardian

"Scratch at the glitz and the family are irritable and messed up like the rest of us, but monstrously so. Heller portrays their awfulness with enjoyably biting humour."---The Independent

"...a beautifully crafted drama about a dysfunctional, deeply miserable, yet still somehow enviable family whose famous father has given the children a sense of entitlement but left them floundering, unable to be more successful, more glamorous, even more rebellious than their parents. Heller has again written a stunning, vastly entertaining novel about horribly unpleasant people."---The Guardian

"... a more mature work than her first two novels, viewing present-day moralities from a wide angle and creating a warm, funny and thoughtful fictional universe. "---The Sunday Times

"... profoundly satisfying. No other novel would readily stand in its stead.... THE BELIEVERS pulses with thematic and intellectual content- a larger sense of purpose, something deep and lasting and larger than mere story- that I find missing in a host of novels."---The Telegraph

"Her third [novel] THE BELIEVERS... is, quite simply, brilliant...a dazzling exploration of tribal values and political and religious belief."---The Independent

"At once a novel of ideas, manners and morals, THE BELIEVERS is an energetic tragicomedy with the bite not just of cynicism, but also heartfelt feelings."---The LA Times

"Heller’s talent lies in the way she illuminates her characters, often with dazzling insight, without making excuses or offering redemption."---The New Yorker
