WALKING ON EGGS: THE ASTONISHING DISCOVERY OF THOUSANDS OF DINOSAUR EGGS IN THE BADLANDS OF PATAGONIA
Doctors Chiappe and Dingus led the research team which, on a field trip to the Patagonian desert in South America in 1997, came across an extraordinary palaeontological coup: the discovery of a kind of dinosaur "maternity ward", a field of eggs 80 million years old, some of which were still unhatched. Then, on a later expedition, they found a nearly complete skeleton of a completely new species of dinosaur a 20-foot predator they named Aucasaurus, after Auca Maheuvo, the name they had given the site. "Walking on Eggs" is not just the account of how these miraculous finds were made. Interweaving chapters featuring field adventures and dinosaur-collecting with others dealing with the history, processes and scientific models involved in solving the mysteries surrounding this spectacular site and its ancient inhabitants, the book is also about the nature of scientific discovery and how such finds contribute to knowledge.
             Chinese Summary/
From BooklistSimply and directly, as they recount their recent expeditions to Patagonia in Argentina, Chiappe and Dingus show how paleontologists and geologists reconstruct an image of ancient life and its environment. In Patagonia they discovered numerous clutches of dinosaur eggs, some containing embryos of sauropods. Finding fossils only begins their work; without interpretation, fossils are just mute rocks. What makes them speak are their geological context--specifically, the ages and types of rock strata in which they are found--and the anatomy preserved in their stone. Instead of drawing any conclusions about the eggs, Chiappe and Dingus stick to explaining how conclusions are reached. They trace the methods of dating that yielded a late Cretaceous date, some 80 million years ago, for the eggs, and discuss the behavioral inferences they drew from the petrified skin, armor, and nests they found. Although factual and methodical, Chiappe and Dingus’ book still gives full rein, in text and illustration, to the imagination, thereby meeting the test for appealing dinosaur books. Gilbert Taylor
