English Summary/英文概要： Nineteen-year-old Ben travels from New York to Boston to see his estranged, alcoholic father after a twelve-year absence. Because of a past trauma involving a lie his father told him, Ben has long felt rejected by his father and withdrawn into himself to the point where he no longer speaks to anyone. His thirteen-year-old half-sister Carrie is the only family member who tries to reach out to Ben. Actually, Carrie is totally absorbed with and concerned about him. But Carrie can’t understand Ben’s change from the loving, funny brother she’s always known to the sullen, shut-off young man he’s become. About the Author/作者介绍： Paula Fox was born in New York City on April 22, 1923. She is the daughter of writer Paul Hervey and Elsie da Sola Fox. She married Richard Sigerson in 1948, and had three children: Adam, Gabriel, and Linda; the couple divorced in 1954. She was married to Martin Greenberg in 1962.
Fox developed a respect for reading as a child. Because her father’s occupation as a writer took him away for business, Fox lived in various places including New York, California, and Cuba (with her grandmother). Despite her formal education being divided among many schools, she was able to learn Spanish fluently and was encouraged to read avidly. Fox returned to New York and attended Columbia University from 1955-1958; however, because of financial difficulties, she was unable to complete her degree. After various jobs, she became a teacher of writing workshops and a professor of literature at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
