English Summary/英文概要： Returning from his trip on the HMS Beagle, Charles Darwin retired to the family home at Downe House in Kent and began to work on his masterpiece The Origin of the Species. Restricted to the house by ill health and family ties he used the garden around him as his laboratory; the evolution of plants, the formation of ecosystems, how children play together. From his observations at Downe, from barnacles to the distribution of weeds upon the path where he made his daily stroll, Darwin was able to create and explore his grand idea of evolution which would set the world alight.
Michael Bulter recreates Darwin’s life and tells how the observation of the garden at Downe House informed his work. He also shows how the very same questions are being asked by scientists today - from Mendel to Richard Dawkins as well as at the cutting edge theories of the hox gene - and shows how, form the same garden, we can still learn lesson about the history of life and remind us that evolution occurs all around us.

Previously the Professor of Palaeontology at UEL, Mike Boulter is a distinguished scientist. He is author of Extinction and currently works at the Natural History Museum.
