THE GERMAN BRIDE

Book ID/图书代码: 01240007B16486

English Summary/英文概要: THE GERMAN BRIDE is a historical novel, beginning in Berlin, 1865. A benevolent Jewish banker hires a young artist to paint his daughters’ portraits. When a secret affair develops between the portrait painter and the family’s youngest daughter Eva, the effects are far-reaching and more devastating than anything her family could have imagined. It is this affair, its aftermath, and the need to flee, which drives Eva Frank to marry Abraham Shein, an ambitious merchant who returns home to Berlin for the first time in a decade since making a life in the American West. Hastily married, Eva leaves Berlin and its ghosts for an unimaginable life across the world.
But, as Eva quickly learns, ghosts are persistent and itinerant. No matter how far she travels-- on a steamship across the Atlantic, across the sweeping vistas of The Santa Fe Trail-- these ghosts of her former life persist in tormenting her. It is only when, years later, after she has settled into Santa Fe, New Mexico-- a town both confounding and magnificent-- that she is forced, in the face of another great decision, to make tenuous peace with her past.
