THE MAP THIEF(曾用名:THE EMPORER’S LAST VOYAGE)

Book ID/图书代码: 01240007B16790

English Summary/英文概要: I am thrilled to send the sequel to THE CHRYSALIS, Heather Terrell’s debut. In this A globe-trotting adventure we plunge again into the murky world of stolen artifacts--masterpieces that are as politically charged as they are beautiful. The Emperor’s Last Voyage details the search for a legendary map that could shake the pillars of history. Terrell wastes no time as we delve into China’s Ming Dynasty, to Europe’s Age of Exploration, to the legacies of each in the present day. Colorful, historical characters people the novel, from China’s Zheng He (the true discoverer of America…?) to Portugal’s Vasco da Gama and Prince Henry the Navigator. Mara Coyne, our protagonist, has grown up in this second novel. Not only have a few years past, but both life and work experience have matured her, and we meet her running her own business, rather than struggling to prove herself in a big legal firm.
Beijing, the early 15th Century: a momentous time for China. The Forbidden City is completed, and a mammoth armada is about to set sail under the direction of the legendary Admiral Zheng He. Its task: to chart the entire globe for the glory of its emperor. On board is a talented calligraphist and cartographer named Ma Zhi, whose work will become the first true map of the world.
Lisbon, later in the 15th century: a momentous time for Portugal. Under the reign of Prince Henry the Navigator, the Age of Exploration has begun. The legendary Vasco da Gama sets sail with three ships to find a sea route to India. On board is a talented navigator named Antonio, who also safeguards Portugal’s most secret treasure: he has a map that already shows them the way.
New York City, present day: frustrated with the legal system’s inability to recover and restore stolen art, Mara Coyne has left her law firm to start her own venture specializing in it. But when a shadowy power player contacts her about an archeological dig he’s financing in China, even Mara isn’t prepared for the kind of treasure she is asked to find. His archeologists have unearthed a body--murdered--and on the body they discovered a map. THE map. The document that historians have long suspected to exist: the guide that allowed the Europeans to "discover" the world and leap into ascendancy. Weaving astounding history into compelling suspense fiction, Heather Terrell’s effort is an adventure spanning two legendary explorations, empires past and present, and the truth behind history that may literally have been buried for hundreds of years.
