THE WILD GIRLS

Book ID/图书代码: 06840007B16894

English Summary/英文概要: Thirteen-year-old Joan’s family has just moved to California. Her parents’ relationship makes her home life a wreck. So she spends most of her time trying to be a “good girl” in order to fly under the radar. The first chance she gets she escapes the house, only to find herself standing outside her gate undecided where to go. She can take a right and go to town or to take a left and head for the woods. In the wood, Joan finds the self-proclaimed Queen of the Foxes.Fox is a scraggly young girl who spends her summer days in a shelter she has made in the woods. Her father is a writer/biker who encourages her to do as she pleases. She informs Joan that her mother was uneasy in her own body and one day decided to leave their house on the edge of the woods. As it began to rain she cuddled up in a hollow log and fell asleep. When she awoke she had been transformed into a sleek fox and for the first time felt at home in her body. Fox now only sees her mother occasionally streaking through the woods, watching over her. The summer deepens their friendship, but as the school year starts, Joan learns that Fox, who is called Sarah outside of the woods, isn’t so comfortable in her own skin. She also begins to see that maybe simply pleasing others isn’t the best way to live her life. WILD GIRLS is a young adult book that explores the power of fiction and the boundaries between metaphor and reality.
