FILTHY LUCRE:ECONOMICS FOR PEOPLE WHO HATE CAPITALISM
Economists are usually right wing, they assume that everyone is self-interested and amoral, and they are almost always cheerleaders for the market economy. As a result, most people who do not already share these beliefs ignore everything that economists have to say. This is a problem. Even among sophisticated practitioners, economics is a field in which people are unusually prone to fallacies. Among those who know nothing at all about the subject—a group that includes the average taxpayer and consumer, as well as most journalists, political activists, and politicians—almost every widely held belief is false. The level of economic illiteracy is stunning.
At the same time, the average person has a great thirst for popular, accessible writing on economics—witness the astounding success of Freakonomics and The Undercover Economist. People are starting to realize that the “dismal science” need not be so dismal.
In Filthy Lucre, Joseph Heath, co-author of the international bestseller The Rebel Sell: Why the Culture Can’t Be Jammed, demonstrates that economics provides crucial lessons that anyone with a concern over social justice, or with a desire to build a better society, must learn. First dissecting six favorite economic fallacies of the right—the private sector is not more efficient than government, taxes can never be too high, and globalization and the myth of international competitiveness among them—Heath then skewers the six favorite economic fallacies of the left—the wet firecracker that is worker-self ownership, a postmortem on communism, and why profit is not evil. In the end, no sacred cow is left standing.
Chinese Summary/
