BATTLE: THE STORY OF THE BULGE

Book ID/图书代码: 02330007B18433

English Summary/英文概要: With victory in sight, U.S. forces suddenly found their backs to the wait in the winter of 1944, as German tanks roared out of the night, in a desperate gamble that only a madman would have attempted. An advance to the Channel coast and the capture of the ports just might have knocked the Western allies out of the war or allowed the Germans to concentrate on the Russians for a crucial period. The SS panzer corps spearheading the attack did not figure on the U.S. 101 st Airborne Division and other units fighting on although surrounded, critically slowing down the offensive. The author has drawn upon official archives and interviews with many veterans of the campaign, some of whom had declined to speak to previous historians.
Reprint of John Toland’s first work of military history, the saga of how beleaguered American troops not only resisted Hitler’s deadly counteroffensive in World War II’s Battle of the Bulge, but turned it into an Allied victory.
“The perspective of 15 years, painstaking research, thousands of interviews, extensive analysis and evaluation, and the creative talent of John Toland [paint] the epic struggle on an immense canvas…. Toland writes with the authority of a man who was there…. He tastes the bitterness of defeat of those who surrendered and writes as if he had the benefit of the eyes and ears of soldiers and generals on the other side of the line…. If you could read only one book to understand generals and GIs and what their different wars were like this is the book.”
