Fishing and the culture of fishing, an ancient trade and a way of life that has defined coastal towns throughout history, is vanishing from the Atlantic. Gloucester, Massachussetts is the rare survivor in New England, where neighboring Rockport, Nantucket, Newport, Mystic, and so many other communities have turned to tourism, the working boats of their harbors replaced by yachts. This is true all along the coast from Newfoundland to Florida, and in the European coastal towns where few significant fleets remain.
The nature of coastal society is changing in ways it never had for centuries, or in Europe for millenia. And few towns like Gloucester fight on, their futures uncertain.
Today in Gloucester an old proverb has a new twist. They now say: "If you give a man a fish, you feed him. If you teach a man to fish, he will starve."
