Stefano Benni’s new novel is everything one would expect from one of Italy’s premier comic writers, and more. It is by turns funny, melancholic, truthful, and full of the sort of deceit that one expects from the grand comic tradition. With Benni, things are never quite what they seem. Margherita Dolcevita is a sweet adolescent who, like many of her age, just so sweetly tips the scales on the heavy side. Her two brothers, one older and one younger, are paragons of hormone-riddled, acne-infested youth in search of new video games, thrills and girls. Her father is the unfortunate carrier of a not so subtle comb-over (soon to become not-so-subtle toupee), and her mother, easy with the tears, is addicted to the worst sorts of South American soap operas. As if that weren’t enough, her grandfather Socrates, the sanest of the lot, rarely makes it out of the house (once a week, in fact, to buy food that has outlived its shelf life). Yet in the midst of this sort of terribly normal state of family affairs, Margherita maintains the most terribly normal view of the world and its inhabitants. Until, that is, a “black glass cube” appears next door, together with its inhabitants – the Del Bene family. The Del Bene seem to offer Margherita’s family everything they could possibly want: a model of economic and social fulfilment, familial harmony and potential erotic love.

About the Author/作者介绍： Stefano Benni1947年出生於義大利的波隆那(Bologna)，曾當過記者，目前的身份為專職作家及詩人，也是當今義大利最活躍的小說家，其作品具有對當今社會的反諷意味及濃厚的魔幻寫實風格。其作品曾被翻譯成多國語言出版：La compagnia dei Celestini(The Company of Celestini, 1992), Elianto(1996), Saltatempo(Timeskipper, 2001), Margherita Dolcevita(Margherita Dolce Vita, 2005), La grammatica di Dio(God’s Grammar, 2007)
Stefano Benni was born in Bologna in 1947. A journalist, writer and poet, he collaborates with numerous publications and directed the “Oxygen” publications at Feltrinelli. Benni worked on the direction and screenplay for the film Musica per vecchi animali (1989), and he writes for the theatre. He is the ideator of the Pluriversity of the Imagination. He is the author of several successful novels, among them La compagnia dei Celestini, (1992), Elianto (1996), Saltatempo (2001) and Margherita Dolcevita (2005).
