An octogenarian, she has spent more than 70 years in the mountain town of Middle Swan, Colorado, and has become its most revered and determined oral historian. Since her arrival in the then-mining camp in the late 1860s as a teenaged Civil War widow, Hennie and Middle Swan have grown up together. Hennie has weathered the turbulent, the tragic, the joyous, and the miraculous and has watched as the town has worn-down and built-up its inhabitants time and time again. Though not always on the best of terms – Middle Swan’s mines have claimed the lives of many, including Hennie’s husband – Hennie has always respected this place, with its unforgiving landscape that lies precariously close to the heavens and its captivating rugged beauty. Hennie and Middle Swan have endured much together and have learned to accept one another.
Now, Hennie is preparing for another change. Her daughter, Mae, after years of worrying about her aging mother’s independent living in the High Country, has insisted that Hennie come down from her mountain and spend her remaining days in Fort Madison, Iowa. Stubborn as she has been in years past, Hennie knows that Mae is now right. It is time for her to go below. But she can’t shake the feeling that transplanting to Iowa would be akin to preparing for death.
When a fresh, young couple comes to Middle Swan, Hennie is immediately drawn to the new bride, Mrs. Nit Spindle, who reminds her so much of herself in her first days on The Swan. The unlikely friendship that develops between the two women gives Hennie impetus to not only pass along the colorful history of their small mountain town, but also to reexamine the patchwork of her own life as she faces her final days on the Tenmile Range. But it’s only when the tattered, faded pieces of her past, tucked away for years, are laid out anew that Hennie Comfort is finally able to mend her a lifelong wound in her own heart and imagine a new life for herself far from her mountain and with an ending happier than she ever thought possible.

About the Author/作者介绍： Sandra Dallas在丹佛大學畢業後，在美國《商業週刊》（BusinessWeek）擔任記者，並在《商業週刊》工作超過25年，該雜誌第一位女性區域主管。
