RIPPED: HOW THE WIRED GENERATION REVOLUTIONIZED MUSIC
Book ID/图书代码: 06120008B20088
English Summary/英文概要: The music industry has been revolutionized. In the mid-nineties, advances in internet and digital technology made it very easy to store, play, and -- most significantly—share recorded music. Problem was, the record business wasn’t ready for it. Without the systems and structure in place to financially take advantage of this massive shift, the industry decided to fight it, wasting effort, money, and reputation. By the time the industry accepted the inevitable and tried to adapt, it was too late. The music business was in free fall and notions of copyright were being redefined.
This was bad news for major record execs and mega-selling recording artists, but it was arguably good news for fans of music and for independent promoters and artists who were struggling to be heard in the era of *NSYNC, Britney, and over-priced CDs. The industry was bloated, making more money than ever before, but many of its consumers felt like they weren’t being served. Old school practices like payola combined with the consolidation of record companies and radio stations to leave the industry blissfully unaware and poised for disaster.
Then came Napster, which was only the beginning of the fans taking control. As the web popularized bands and albums that previously would have been relegated to obscurity, forward-thinking artists -- from Prince to Death Cab for Cutie -- started coming up with alternative ways of getting their music out to fans. Genre-bending and mash-ups caught on as never before. Live music took on a more significant role. Video games and commercials emerged as great places to hear new music. Then, in 2007, Radiohead released an album exclusively on the internet and allowed customers to name their own price. $0.00 was an option.

“Probing and insightful. Kot lays bare the stresses of the musician’s life, the vagaries of the business, and the very essence of what makes for good music and a vibrant music scene. Wilco fans will love this book, but Kot’s excellent work deserves an even wider audience.” --– Publishers Weekly
