A mother walks out of the house and disappears leaving behind two children. They were told their mother died in a car crash but there was no funeral and eventually they go looking for their mother, fascinated by the possibility that she was a spy in post war Germany.
The Spy Game is beautifully written, both emotionally moving and transporting with wonderful evocative detail that works on many levels: as a coming of age novel with perfectly rendered scenes of childhood, as a meditation on grief and the different ways people react to it, as a novel about the paranoia of the Cold War and the fall out for the generation that survived the Second World War. It is both literary and page turning.
