COLD STEEL: BRITAIN’S RICHEST MAN AND THE MULTI-BILLION-DOLLAR BATTLE FOR A GLOBAL INDUSTRY

Book ID/图书代码: 06580008B20692

English Summary/英文概要: COLD STEEL is the gripping story of the world’s biggest and most hard-fought industry takeover of recent years, an epic corporate battle that would send shockwaves through the political corridors of Europe, excite the world’s financial markets, enrich thirty hedge funds and transform the global steel industry. In 2006, the two largest steel-producers went head to head in a bitter battle for total market domination. Lakshmi Mittal, a Calcutta-born industrialist who had raised himself up from humble beginnings to become the world’s fourth-richest man, proposes a friendly merger with rival Arcelor, a pan-European company whose interested parties include the governments of Spain, Luxembourg and Belgium. Arcelor’s mercurial CEO, Frenchman Guy Dolle, firmly refuses, and the scene is set for a massive hostile takeover involving billions of dollars of finance, government and shareholder manoeuvring, and accusations of jingoism and double-dealing. Fast-paced and electrifying, COLD STEEL brings to life the cut and thrust of big business at war.

Awards/获奖情况:’A rare, insider’s account of lots of people making millions . . . The book reads like a thriller, with each side trying to rope in other steel companies on both sides of the Atlantic as allies . . . As this book shows, money and business logic prevailed in the end over politics and protection.’---The Economist 2008/4/17 Full review

A business book that "appeals to the general reader…the authors recount events in the form of a thriller:..The result is a tumultuous narrative in which the dramatis personae seem constantly engaged in agitated conversations on their mobiles”---Sunday Telegraph

"Too few page turning books are written on the high drama and low cunning of business and finance. Cold Steel is a welcome addition…A compelling tale”---Financial Times

Cold Steel’s authors are “admirably qualified to guide us through the myriad twists and turns of this compelling business saga…an enormously entertaining read”.---Daily Express

‘Tim Bouquet and Byron Ousey have written an account of the takeover in the style of a thriller. Cold Steel describes the often brutal and chaotic five-month battle between Mittal and Arcelor. The combatants are described as though starring in a fictional work of industrial espionage’---Management Today

About the Author/作者介绍: Tim Bouquet has interviewed Lakshmi Mittal many times, and as a result, Mittal has given full cooperation for this book along with more than fifty other leading players in the story, including Guy Dollé.

After fifteen years as a business journalist, specialising in civil engineering writing for The Times and the Sunday Times, Ousey worked for Lloyds Bank, as its first ever externally appointed press officer, De Beers, where he became Manager of International PR (apartheid, conflict diamonds, price collapse), and Morgan Grenfell, taking it public and riding straight into the Guinness affair.
