A descendant of the Maya living in the year 2012, Jed DeLanda is a math prodigy who spends his time playing Go against his computer and raking in profits from online trading (his secret weapon in predicting corn futures is an ancient Mayan divination game that his mother taught him, once used for predicting the cycles of the corn harvest). But Jed’s quiet life is thrown into chaos when a mysterious woman called Marena Park invites him to give his opinion on a newly discovered Mayan Codex – a document that predicts events leading up to the end of the world on December 21, 2012.
It turns out that the Codex describes a divination game much like the one handed down in Jed’s family, and Marena (along with a murky organization known as The Warren Commission) wants a volunteer – someone to travel back in time, play the game with the Maya, and report back on what they knew about the end of the world. Jed leaps at the chance … only something goes wrong, and he arrives not in the body of a king, but in the body of a famous ball-player named Chacal. Unfortunately for Jed, Chacal is about to throw himself down the temple steps as a voluntary human sacrifice. If Jed can live through the next few minutes, he just might save the world…

Since sending you the first 5 chapters last month, I’m thrilled to say that this book - in fact, the whole trilogy - caused much excitement at the London Book Fair, and as a result, we have just auctioned the German rights to all three titles. The auction was won by Luebbe (who publish Dan Brown among others) for advances of 105,000 Euros per title.
They obviously see it as their next big bestseller in this genre.
I am now sending you the complete manuscript of Volume I in PDF format, attached. I hope you (and the publishers) won’t have a problem downloading it - it takes up 6.5MB since it’s 903 pages (!). Apparently Word makes the file unmanageably large (17MB), even though it brings it down to 708 pages. Don’t be alarmed though - Dutton say the finished book will be 576 pages - about the same as The Da Vinci Code.
This is of course unedited, and the author says he still needs to do a little work on the middle of the book’s Act 2 (the Maya world section) to tighten it up, but I don’t think we need to worry about that. I think it more than fulfills the promise of the first five chapters. All the drawings are by the author, too.
Anyway, let me know if you have trouble downloading the material. I could send it on disc if necessary.
The overall title of the trilogy will be IN THE COURTS OF THE SUN and this first volume will be called THE SACRIFICE GAME. We don’t yet have titles for vols II and III - but apparently the second book in the Trilogy takes place mainly in "Ancient Mayaland", and the third book takes place mainly in the near future. The author says the second book is about eighty percent finished, and the third book is closer to fifty percent.
