"Our rules for living were not their rules," he writes in this wry, affectionate reflection on a childhood spent between two continents, two civilizations, two versions of history.

Awards/获奖情况：WINNER OF THE J.R.ACKERLEY PRIZE FOR AUTOBIOGRAPHY 2002
The J. R. Ackerley Prize for Autobiography is awarded annually by the English Centre for International PEN to an author resident in Britain who has written an outstanding autobiography in English. The winner receives £1,000 and a silver pen. The winner is announced on PEN Writers’ Day in June. The award was established by Nancy West, nee Ackerley, sister of English author and editor J. R. Ackerley.J. R. Ackerley (November 4, 1896 - June 4, 1967)his full registered name was Joe Ackerley .He was arts editor of The Listener, the weekly magazine of the BBC, and an important author in his own right.
