Book ID/图书代码: 04332808B22297

English Summary/英文概要: “You can always start again,“ Kate Robinson’s mother once told her, ”all it takes is a new thread.“ Overwhelmed by heartbreak and loss, the struggling twenty-six-year-old fashion designer follows her mother’s advice and flees to Ireland, hoping to break free of old patterns and reinvent herself.

Soon Kate is stranded in the Gaelic village of Glenmara, a hamlet in western Ireland with charms and problems of its own. There, she develops a bond with members of the local lace-making society.

Under Glenmara’s spell, Kate finds the inspiration that has eluded her, and she and the lace makers create a line of exquisite lingerie-and gain the strength to face long-denied desires and fears. But not everyone welcomes Kate to Glenmara, and a series of unexpected events threatens to unravel everything the women have worked so hard for. . .

“The Lace Makers of Glenmara is richly people and beguilingly charming, but what ultimately makes it so moving is Heather Barbieri’s deep understanding that no life is immune from sorrow and difficulty. I read this wonderful novel with enormous pleasure.”---Margot Livesey

Seattlest.com, July 6, 2009 Review and Event Listing "We’re normally not a fan of ’chick flicks,’ but given the deeper purposes, well thought-out characters, loads of romantic scenery, and schooling on Ireland’s history, we wouldn’t put this one past us. The book provides just enough drama to pull you in, but not so much that it might make it seem trashy or unbelievable. The Lace Makers of Glenmara also illustrates that Barbieri did her homework -- not only in the language and Gaelic, but in the setting as well. It’s a quick read, is truly heartfelt, and in all, is a charming story of one woman setting out to make something better for herself with no expectations of aid besides her own capabilities." The Bellingham Herald, June 27, 2009 Review "...A sweet-tempered new offering from Seattle author Heather Barbieri...the larger tale of cross-cultural and intergenerational friendship is uplifting. Barbieri’s messages [are] about the healing power of working together, about creating new patterns when the old ones won’t do, and about the patience required in unsnarling knots and twining our life threads together in beautiful ways..."
