Only Steven’s Nan is not convinced her son, Billy, is dead. She still waits for him to come home, standing bitter guard in the front window of their damp, crumbling little house, while her family fragments around her.
Steven is determined to heal the cracks that gape darkly between his Nan, his mother, his brother and himself. And if that means presenting his grandmother with the bones of her murdered son, he’ll do it. So with a child’s directness – and an adult’s wisdom in keeping his identity secret – Steven writes to Avery in prison to ask him for help in finding Billy’s body.
So begins a cat-and-mouse game between a desperate child and a bored prisoner.
But when Avery finally discovers that the letters he’s receiving are from a 12-year-old boy, suddenly he has a purpose too.
